Description:
Commissioned by British media arts agency LUX, House of Smoke is an adaptation of the late playwright Ronald Tavel's The Last Days of British Honduras. Co-directors Farhad Sharmini and Catherine Sullivan transpose a sharply truncated version of Tavel's 1971 magic realistic drama from the territory now known as Belize to urban Chicago. Tavel's original is ostensibly about the legacy of colonialism, but it also incorporates a m?lange of seemingly incongruous elements, including light comedy, Mayan mysticism, primitivism, poltical intrigue, and psychosexual melodrama. Plus teleportation and interplanetary travel by force of mind alone. The artists seize on this provocative convergence of dramatic and comedic elements to address, among other things, the political anxiety now associated with evolving demographic trends in the United States.
